South Glastonbury Public Library

In 2005 GPIP and the South Glastonbury Public Library formed a partnership to beautify and improve the library grounds. Two important objectives of this project are developing historically appropriate plantings and making maintenance of the site and plantings easier for the Library's volunteers. The library is located at 80 High Street, South Glastonbury.

Fall, 2006
This Spring, five GPIP members and volunteers from the Library Board installed bluestone under the dripline along both sides of the Library. The existing soil was excavated several inches deep, and replaced with trap rock dust, which formed a solid base. The bluestone was then set on this base. A remaining short strip at the rear of the building will be completed this Fall.

GPIP purchased and installed Tree Gators to water each of the five new trees. The Daly family, who are neighbors of the Library, fills the Gators as needed.

November, 2005
This summer, GPIP worked with the Library Board to prepare a planting plan for the site. We planted four trees on the sides of the library, put in a new shrub planting in front of the building, and mulched all the plantings. The four trees are in addition to the Elm planted last fall.

The next phase of the project, planned for Spring, will have GPIP and Library volunteers laying bluestone around the building. This technique is historically appropriate for the building's time period. The stones will stabilize the ground under the 'drip line' and provide a mowing strip, making maintenance easier for the Library.
