South Glastonbury Main Street

GPIP is working with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT), Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P), the Town Tree Warden and local property owners to plant new trees on and near Main Street in South Glastonbury. Our goals are:
  1. To replace trees removed by CL&P with trees whose height and shape are suitable for planting under overhead utilities.
  2. To enhance the livability and appearance of the village of South Glastonbury by expanding tree planting along Main Street.

October 1, 2006
The Greening of South Glastonbury began in fall of 2005 with the planting of more than a dozen trees to add green cover to a largely asphalt landscape. This was a partnership between the Town of Glastonbury Parks and Recreation and GPIP. In the spring of 2006 GPIP added 3 evergreens, bringing the total of new trees in the 'Village' area to seventeen.GPIP has purchased Tree Gators for watering each new tree. The Park Department is keeping them filled with water as needed.

GPIP volunteers have placed three benches for pedestrians in South Glastonbury. They can be found in front of Gardiners, near Harpos, and at St. Lukes Church. One has been sponsored by Gino Draghi's family in memory of his parents. Claude-Evelyn Odiaka has sponsored one in memory of her sister. GPIP would welcome a sponsor for the other.

Eight planters have also been added to the streetscape, sponsored by Framing by Gordon, Gardiners and Harpos. In addition, Dr. Brian Chiffer has sponsored two planters at the entrance to his office. This extends the highly successful planter project into the southern end of Town.

December, 2005
On Thursday 12/1 GPIP volunteers met in South Glastonbury to plant three American Elms as part of the streetscape improvement project. The Elms are Dutch Elm disease resistant
Valley Forge Elms, grown by GPIP in the Town Tree Nursery. GPIP planted two Elms in a parking lot island and one next to the Masonic Hall, all on the West side of Main Street. In late November, Glastonbury Parks and Recreation Dept. workers planted several new trees along the South side of Main Street. GPIP plans to continue planting new trees in the spring.

November, 2005
CL&P has taken down several trees on the East side of Main Street that were interfering with overhead wires. GPIP has secured permission from CDOT to proceed with the project. We hope to plant the first four trees before the ground freezes this fall.
