Early Sunday morning August 29th, GPIP volunteers met at the intersection of Main St.
and Route 17 to continue preparing three large planting beds in the traffic islands.
In late July Glastonbury Parks & Recreation workers had sprayed the planting beds
with herbicide to kill the grass and weeds. On August 22nd GPIP tilled the dead
grass into the soil to create the three planting beds. The Town of Glastonbury
brought forty cubic yards of leaf compost from the Transfer Station to enrich the
soil.
The August 29th working day consisted of spreading the compost on the beds, raking
the compost to remove debris, and tilling in the compost. Bob Shipman and Howard
Horton volunteered tractor time to spread the compost and till it. Other volunteers
include: Roger Burr, Ellen Pratt, Edie Kelley, Deborah Kent, Bonnie Maguire (project
co-chair) Paul Redington, and Della & Roger Winans.
GPIP has two additional working days scheduled. On
September 19th and 26th we will
be planting shrubs and perennial flowers. Volunteers are needed; please contact
Bonnie Maguire or Della Winans if you would like to help plant. Gardening experience
is not necessary!
