Town Center Planters

The reconstruction of Main Street in the late 1990s left the center with several expanses of barren road-side brick. Interested citizens (Community Beautification Commission members and their families) planted the first planters in 2000 to bring life to the brick peninsulas by Daybreak Coffee. In the years since the number of planters has grown. In 2004 GPIP volunteers took on the task of planting and supervising the maintenance of the planters. From the eight initial planters, GPIP now plants more than five times as many. The forty-five 2006 planters brighten the center from Sparkle Car Wash to just south of School Street and the first block of Hebron Avenue.

October, 2006
The only thing predictable about weather in Connecticut is that each year will be different! After nursing the planters through a too-hot and too-dry summer in 2005, this year brought us days on end of cool dampness, broken by only one real heat wave. The begonias and pansies loved it! Many of the cannas refused to bloom at all for lack of sunshine. But because we have learned to plant an assortment of flowers in each planter, there has been a continual display all season.

We thank the following sponsors for helping make this possible:
  • Century 21
  • Country Gardeners Garden Club
  • Daybreak Coffee Roasters
  • Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce
  • Glastonbury Opticians
  • Main Street Office Center
  • Pazzo
  • Sixty Three Hebron Avenue
  • Sparkle Car Wash
  • Textures
  • The Law Firm of Barbara Wagner

November, 2005
Despite summer heat and drought, 2005 was another successful year for planters in the town center. GPIP volunteers planted 39 planters which were placed on Main Street and Hebron Avenue. The following businesses sponsored planters:
